Nom donne’ par l’auteur (name given by the author), in other words, the definition of the word ‘title’ according to the French dictionary, is Jerome Bel’s first choreographic creation, a seminal work for European dance which dates back to 1994.  It could be a choreography of objects, a theatre of things, a multi-perspective painting, a classical ballet with accompanists or a performance: according to the way in which one looks at this essential pair, Jerome Bel and Frederic Seguette, lead this concatenation of signs and actions, following a precise visual and spatial score. Ten objects constitute the material for the piece: they are placed in the space and start to react. A good take on the potential of the Saussurian sign: signifier/signified. The connections ignite sparks in an unexpected way, mixing up different orders of reality. In this work on material culture, not only are the intellectual borrowings from Roland Barthes’ The zero degree of writing and George Perec’s Things very clear, but so is Bel's intention to stay within the dance sphere in order to explore the linguistic possibilities of the choreography. This rediscovery of Bel for F.I.S.Co.08, wants to open and close an avant-garde experience, not to be relegated to documents, proposing it once again as a living story.
