Speak, Memory, Speak di Fanny & Alexander nasce come commissione di Xing per il progetto Italian Landscapes - lounge theatre: un dispositivo legato alla visione e all’ascolto, con tre grandi quadri di immagini sonorizzati dal vivo dagli artisti stessi. Un meccanismo leggero, quasi ambient, a cui il pubblico si può lasciare andare: in un flusso, seguendo a piacimento l'atto performativo (il live elettronico) o il ciclo delle figure sugli schermi.

Speak, Memory, Speak è il primo passo che Fanny & Alexander affonda nel paesaggio letterario nabokoviano, una ricognizione che ha a che fare con le apparizioni e col loro strano spietato linguaggio, con un sovrumano desiderio di realtà.

Ogni paesaggio necessita di un medium per realizzarsi. Ma se, nella spirale in cui si svolge ogni atto creativo, quando un’opera futura è vicina alla nascita, lo spazio si incrina in qualcosa di più simile al tempo, e, a sua volta, il tempo si aggroviglia a certe evanescenti figure, quasi di spettro, allora, sicuramente, resterà solo una Dimensione, un altro Paesaggio speciale, finché la spirale ritornerà ancora circolo, giostra viziosa, anello trasparente.

Il giovane cronofobico You Person, ripercorre il vuoto sterminato del suo tempo prenatale (egli stesso è un personaggio di una fiction ancora a venire), e quello ancora più minaccioso che si spalanca al di là della sua congetturale e ipotetica esistenza futura. Egli tenta disperatamente di aggrapparsi a quell’esiguo brandello di realtà che la contingente natura live di questo video gli consente. Da lui ci si aspetta che accetti i due neri vuoti, così come egli fa con l’illusoria e fugacissima visione che balena e sfarfalla tra loro. “Ma ogni Immaginazione, suprema delizia dell’immortale e dell’immaturo, dovrebbe essere sempre, a suo modo, limitata”. Speak, Memory, Speak by Fanny & Alexander, commissioned by Xing for the project Italian Landscapes - lounge theatre, is a live event based on vision and sound: a screening set of three large images in parallel, with a live soundtrack. It's a light mechanism, almost ambient, to which the audience can let themselves go: into a flow, following at their pleasure the performative act (the electronic live set) or the cicle of images on the screens.

Speak, Memory, Speak marks Fanny & Alexander’s first foray into the Nabokovian literary landscape: an exploration concerned with apparitions and their strange, ruthless language, and with a superhuman desire for reality.

Every landscape requires a medium to come into being. Yet if - within the spiral where every creative act unfolds, and as a future work nears birth - space fractures into something more akin to time, and time, in turn, becomes entangled with certain evanescent, almost spectral figures, then surely only one Dimension will remain: another special Landscape, until the spiral once again becomes a circle, a vicious carousel, a transparent ring.

The young chronophobe You Person retraces the vast emptiness of his prenatal time (he himself is a character in a fiction yet to come), as well as the even more menacing void that yawns beyond his conjectural and hypothetical future existence. He desperately attempts to cling to that meager shred of reality afforded him by the contingent, live nature of this video. He is expected to accept the two empty blackouts, just as he accepts the illusory, fleeting vision that flashes and flickers between them. “But every Imagination, supreme delight of the immortal and the immature, should be limited”.
