[The User]

The project [The User] was born in 1988. The architect Thomas McIntosh and the composer Emmanuel Madan, have decided to maintain a 15 year time gap from the present, in order to offer the smallest possible reference to new technology. The use of background noise, as the raw material of their research, is the result of a study on the banal aspects of the human condition and on its being articulated into under-products of existence . [The User] has been given the task of passing the universe through a sieve of banal, everyday noises in order to extract the grains of truth from them.

[The User] produces complex audio-video works, which explore the relationship between humanity and technology through the figure of obsolescence and resistance to progress.

One of their more recent projects is Silophone. This is a complex work lying between architecture, art, music and new technology. It was produced starting from an extraordinary piece of industrial archeology in Montreal, Silo no. 5, which had been transformed into an exceptional instrument, if not other than for its dimensions and could be played on, live, from remote locations (by using the telephone and the web).

Out of this project, which covers a crucial icon of Canadian industrial history, has come Abandon, a [The User] composition in collaboration
with the artist Stéphane Claude and released on CD by Asphodel.
