Xing presenta FESTA, un nuovo progetto che si svolgerà nel 2026 e 2027 tra Bologna e altri siti della penisola.

FESTA si articola in commissioni affidate a personalità artistiche per ideare e realizzare ciascuna una tipologia di evento ‘festivo’, un prototipo inteso come momento di sospensione dell’ordinarietà, nei tempi e nei modi.

Partiamo da una domanda: esiste all’interno della nostra contemporaneità, un uso o per lo meno un’idea della ‘festa’? La risposta non può che avviare un lavoro di ricerca. 
 
Affrontare un tema tanto vasto e stratificato quanto frainteso, abusato e disatteso è forse un azzardo. Dalla feria come pausa dal lavoro alla più banale interpretazione del party; dal pic-nic alla più ambiziosa dimensione adottata dai regimi per celebrarsi o celebrare i propri miti fondativi; dalla parata/parade alle marce di contestazione nella loro codificazione spontanea; dalle feste popolari e devozionali ai rave (ormai divenuti illegali, almeno in Italia); dalla sagra al potlach; dai fuochi epifanici invernali fino alla dimensione più intima delle ricorrenze private o familiari (battesimi, compleanni, matrimoni e funerali), ciò che vorremmo prendere a prestito è solo la convocazione per un (nuovo) appuntamento propiziatorio e non celebrativo, incluso il suo aspetto di ‘spreco’. .
 
FESTA 2026-27 non presenta occasioni di svago, ma opere performative pensate per luoghi non connotati funzionalmente che accompagnino uno stare sospesi: tra parentesi e fuori dal cicli operativi e funzionali dell’ordinario. Un cambio (temporaneo) di regime. Una serie di situazioni che si richiamano l’un l’altra, scandite lungo l’arco di un calendario da immaginare.

Xing presents FESTA, a new project taking place in 2026 and 2027 in Bologna and other locations across Italy.

FESTA is based on commissions to artistic personalities, each invited to conceive and create a typology of 'festive event’, a prototype for an artwork intended as a moment of suspension of the ordinary, in terms of time and manner.
 
Does a use, or at least an idea, of ‘FESTA’ exist within our contemporary world? The answer can only initiate a process of exploration.
 
Tackling a topic as vast and multifaceted as it is misunderstood, overused, and neglected is perhaps a hazard. From the feria as a break from work to the most banal interpretation of the party; from the picnic to the more ambitious dimension adopted by regimes to celebrate themselves or their founding myths; from the parade to protest marches in their spontaneous codification; from popular and devotional festivals to raves (now illegal, at least in Italy); from the festival to the potlatch; from winter Epiphany fires to the most intimate dimension of private or family celebrations (baptisms, birthdays, weddings, and funerals), what we would like to borrow is only the call for a (new) propitiatory and non-celebratory appointment, including its aspect of 'waste'. 

FESTA is not a mere occasion for entertainment. Together with the artists, Xing will identify places where live events can be created to accompany a state of suspension: in parentheses and outside the operational and functional cycles of the ordinary. A (temporary) change of regime. A series of situations that recall one another, punctuated along the arc of a yet-to-be imagined calendar. 

The FESTA 2026-2027 program is part of Xing's research into Live Arts for over two decades, showing the amplitude of contemporary practices and languages that manifest in extended temporality (duration) marked by presence. At the heart of this project is the desire to investigate and reshape the relationship between art and the public.
